Star Casino Theatre Sydney
The Sydney Lyric is one of three Broadway touring houses in Sydney and a part of the Star Casino. Ownership saw an opportunity to reach more audiences if the theatre could be adjusted to various seating capacities to suit different productions.
Schuler Shook worked with Stephen Found and Altis Architects to completely redefine the Sydney Lyric Theatre auditorium into a more intimate and scalable space that is suitable for a wide range of commercial touring productions. Schuler Shook’s work began with a study for the improvement of the seating plan at the side boxes and options for a reduction wall that cuts off the rear of the main floor seating.

The challenge was met with a solution that involves a number of acoustically calibrated screens that retract vertically, as well as the addition of new zoned lighting to allow the visible seating area to change based on the needs of the production. Four seating configurations can be called up quickly, including via an app run from the owner’s phone. Seating ranges from 1,350 seats to the full 2,010 seats.
The renovation greatly increases the intimacy of the space by realigning the box seating, adding new rows to the balcony fronts, and completely changing the interior design and lighting. The floor was re-raked and sightlines were improved throughout. Schuler Shook’s architectural lighting design for the renovation highlights the architecture and wood and brass details of the room.
Backstage improvements include new green rooms and staff offices with monitors to see every performance from any office. The Sydney Lyric reopened in 2017.
I just can’t put into words how happy we are with how the theatre looks. The lighting is everything we had hoped for and more. What has been achieved is a testament to your professionalism and skill.”Related Theatre Planning Projects
